As a general rule of thumb, American Apparel shirts are intended to have a more fitted sytle than a normal cut t-shirt. If you like your tees nice and baggy, get a size larger. If you like a more “fashion tee” style, then get the size you’d normally buy.

Measure under arms around the fullest part of the chest. Be sure to keep tape level across back and comfortably loose.
Measure around natural waist with a loose tape.
