Shirt Fight vs Evanimal…The HARD HITTING questions!

We sat down (virtually) with our first Shirt Fight winner Evanimal for a little one-on-one, tested his mental prowess and tried to find out what makes this LA designer tick. I discovered we share a love for a southern delicacy, and that Evanimal *just* might be my brother from another mother. Here's the interview:

ShirtFight: Congratulations man! What a month this has been for ya, I need your luck for gambling… You just took the very first trophy of ShirtFight, how does it feel?

Evanimal: It feels incredible. I've been training every morning at the crack of dawn, thrusts, squats, Brazilian mud wrestling, and all i can say is that it paid off. Plus I have some cool scars now.

ShirtFight: Speaking of luck, where are the other places that you won this month? I think it is awesome that artists can get this much exposure nowadays.

Evanimal: Yeah i've been hitting the interweb with a vengeance. I got a design picked up at Teefury of an indie Batman in duress, W00t has picked one up that they will be printing soon, and another very popular site will be doing a sweet all over print that I submitted a while ago. They actually installed a poison capsule in my am, so if I spill the story prematurely, I'll end up a twitching pile in the corner.

ShirtFight: Walk us through what inspires you, and how you got into graphic design?

Evanimal: I have been drawing my entire life, it's something that has come as naturally to me as breathing. If I don't or can't draw, it would be like drowning I think. The longest i've gone was a full month when I was in the Marines, in boot camp. Fortunately they were torturing us so much that I hardly noticed. As far as inspiration goes, my favorite source is people, and living in LA is like paradise for freaks and weirdos, which are my specialty. I like strange faces, oddly shaped bodies, and silly walks. Music movies, comics, the usual as well....

"I dedicate this victory to my sister Lily, who was my biggest fan on this design! Thanks baby!"

ShirtFight: Any words of wisdom to all the other ShirtFighters out there for their future battles?

Evanimal: Think of yourselves as little Mad Max's, and think of each other as Master Blaster. Now envision yourself sweaty, covered in dust, and badly beaten in the Thunderdome. But do you give up?! HELL NO! You grab a post apocalyptic chainsaw, give a wink to ol' Tina Turner, and go bananas on that midget riding a giant standing between you and freedom! 2 men enter! 1 man leaves!

ShirtFight: We’ve had some amazing submissions for the last two weeks…what artists out there do you think deserve recognition?

Evanimal: I definitely think Sassattoo deserves a ton of respect for the amount of work he put into this fight. His designs were hilarious, line work was tight, and his colors are perfect. Pitchgrim was another artist that I was crazy about. I love the style in which he draws and the amount of detail on the "It's just a dream" piece was breathtaking. Also Jewelwing's design really caught my eye, something in the way she used her colors and forms screamed vintage French wine poster to me, and come on, who doesn't like Vintage French wine posters? There were a lot of other great submissions, and you all should be proud to have the courage to put yourself out there and take the initiative.

ShirtFight: Of course we have to ask what your favorite junk food is and what did you have the night before “YOU MIGHT NEED MORE THAN A NIGHTLIGHT THIS TIME…”was born?

Evanimal: My favorite junk food might be pretty obscure to a lot of you, but being a Georgia boy living out here in LA, I LONG for it nonstop. It's boiled peanuts. If you go out into the country in the South, you will eventually come upon a magical and wondrous place on the side of the road. It's shoddily built on a plot of tire tracked red clay, and sits like beacon of hope in the sun. There's a big bubbling cauldron of salty, boiled peanuts, which a mostly toothless man with a generous disposition will bag for you to take on your journey. They are soft and hot and could pretty much end world war. I wish that I had eaten these before bed, but alas, I am far away from that slice of heaven.

ShirtFight: Remember that part in Fight Club where they were talking about who they’d like to fight? Well…who would you like to trade blows with (live or dead)…and do you think you would win?

Evanimal: If I could fight anyone, I'd fight Genghis Khan, because on the ever so slight chance that I would win, that kind of reputation generally makes you a god. Plus I think he'd have me back to the tent for some kind of ridiculous feast and/or Mongolian orgy.

ShirtFight: Last but not least, you got any plans for the $2009 prize money?

Evanimal: I plan to spend it on black market body parts. I've got this great basement in my buidling with chains and rusty hooks and stuff (totally came like that), and I plan on piecing together a small army of thieves, muggers, general felon types, and take control of the streets at night, wreaking havoc on the populous.

Thanks Evanimal, this has been an honor for us to chat with you! We hope to see more great submissions from you… Your artwork is truly wonderful and talented!

I have enjoyed looking at all of the entries and am amazed at how much talent there is out there. I am Evanimal's father and I can tell you that his interview was just like rasing him at home. We thought he was nuts! Every book or piece of paper had small pictures of people getting their heads cut off or wild new weapons in the hands of hedious monsters. I believe that he would not be allowed on public school property in today's PC world. Good luck to you all.
